1600 Fava Beans

The score was composed by Jonas Mekas and Rimvdys Pupelis in New York and Lithuania.
This score was then sent to various galleries in Japan as part of the traveling exhibition, "Jonas Mekas and Friends' Little International Exhibition."
While participating in the exhibition by presenting a 'Local Artist's Workshop' at the Canolfan Gallery in Nagoya I was offered the opportunity to present the '1600 Fava Beans' performance at Nagoya Zoukei University where I was working as an independent researcher with Takahiko Iimura.
The performance was staged in a public space. It was announced a week ahead of time with flyers hung around campus and at the Canolfan Gallery.
Anyone who came within speaking distance of the performance was invited to participate.
Performers are asked to select a bean from a hand-built wooden box. Each bean in the box was inscribed with a number between 1 and 1600.
The performers are then asked to find the area of a grid (drawn on a piece of white fabric) that corresponds to the number written on the bean which they have selected.
After finding the corresponding square the bean is then placed in that square.
