The group show was intended to act as a somewhat mocking retrospective of the three artists as yet short careers. Work from pre-school through college was shown alongside new work conceived especially for the show.
The old work was hung in salon style and then awarded to guests at the closing party who were winners in successive games of bingo presented by Andy Nau and MC'ed by Yuka Fujimori.
'Deja Vu' is a shadow play using the projected image of a video collage made from my previous video work. The performance was staged in 'Subart,' to record a sound track for a previously silent 8mm film which I had produced two years earler. Subart is a performance space connected to 'The Forbes Gallery.' The 8mm film comprised the middle section of the video collage.
The sound was recorded with a hand-held digital 8mm video camera. The use of the camera as a sound recording device allowed various parts of the performance to come to the foreground of the recording as the camera man effectively mixed the sound based on visual cues in a room lit only by the bulb of the video projector.
Digital 8mm also provides stereo sound which is essential for illustrating spacial qualities with sound.
Prior to the beginning of 'Deja Vu' the camera strayed from Subart into the "non-space" hallways that connect to The Forbes Gallery. Here he captured sounds from the ongoing bingo and general revelry of the closing reception to preparation for, and the beginning of, 'Deja Vu.' In the 'non-space' all of these sounds blend together with occasional cryptic remarks from behind the camera.
'Deja Vu' featured Alicia Allen, Randy Funk, Mark Hardy, Nicholas Hohn, Tonya Kisner, Jon Lin, Christen Napier, Carolyn Segermark, Steven Shaw, and Ian Wood.
Technical assistance was provided by Doug 'miricle man' Williard, Damien Hassan, Alicia Allen, and Nicholas Hohn.
